What is ElevenLabs?

A beginner’s guide to what it does, how to try it and what to check.

What is text-to-speech?

Text-to-speech converts written words into an audio performance. ElevenLabs lets you choose a voice and generate spoken output from a script. Voice cloning is different: it uses a voice sample to help reproduce a voice. Dubbing also involves language and timing choices.

Pick the task before choosing a tool. Listening to your study notes, recording a narration and dubbing an interview have different requirements. A voice that sounds impressive in a demo may not pronounce your names or fit your audience.

Make a short sample before a long narration

Our suggested test is a paragraph you wrote with one name, a number and a sentence that needs natural pauses. Use a permitted stock voice first. Generate the sample, listen with the script in front of you and note every mismatch.

Revise wording or pronunciation guidance, then compare again. A short test catches problems before you spend credits on a long recording. Check important words at normal playback speed, not only while skimming.

English, French and Canadian pronunciation

Language and regional pronunciation are separate questions. A voice can speak French while sounding unlike your intended audience; a place name may require additional attention. Test the specific words that matter to your recording.

If you do not speak the target language, ask a competent reviewer to listen before publishing. Audio fluency can hide a mistranslation just as polished writing can hide an incorrect fact.

Voice permission and commercial use

Do not clone or imitate someone’s voice without the authorization needed for your use. Avoid making a recording appear to be a real statement by a person who did not say it. Use clear disclosure when synthetic audio could be mistaken for a human recording.

ElevenLabs distinguishes commercial licensing by plan. Its support guidance says the Free plan does not include a commercial license. Check the current terms for the particular tool, voice and plan before using audio in ads, paid products or monetized content.

What makes a usable voiceover?

Listen for pacing, stress, missing words, odd breaths and changes in tone. A voiceover should be understandable on the device where your audience will hear it. Leave room for visuals and pauses rather than packing every second with narration.

Keep the original script and a record of the chosen voice and settings. If you revise the script later, regenerate and review the affected passage. Do not assume that replacing a sentence will preserve exactly the same performance.
