Why people use Perplexity
Its central appeal is combining a conversational answer with links to supporting material. You can ask a follow-up question without starting your research from scratch. Perplexity also offers paid research features and other products; this guide focuses on the everyday answer experience.
Use it to discover vocabulary, competing explanations and potential sources. It is less helpful if you accept the summary without opening the documents you actually need.
A research question worth trying
Our example is: “Explain the difference between Wi-Fi speed and my internet plan speed. Use primary sources, separate the two concepts and link to the pages supporting your explanation.”
Open each source. Does it discuss the same issue, or only something nearby? Does the cited passage support the sentence? Check dates and distinguish a manufacturer’s claim from independent testing. This habit makes an answer engine useful even when a summary is incomplete.
How to read the citations
A source can be real yet weak evidence. It might be old, cover another country, describe an announced feature rather than an available one, or repeat another writer’s reporting. Follow the chain to the primary document when practical.
For a Canadian policy question, prioritize the relevant government or regulator page. If sources disagree, ask the tool to list the disagreement rather than silently merge incompatible statements into a smooth paragraph.
Perplexity versus ChatGPT and Google
Perplexity’s answer experience emphasizes web research and citations. ChatGPT is a broader conversational workspace that can also search. Google Search provides a route to pages rather than requiring you to accept one synthesized answer.
Choose according to the job. For finding an exact official form, a direct search may be enough. For outlining a new topic, a sourced overview can save orientation time. For rewriting your own notes, a general assistant may fit better.
Free and paid access: decide from a real task
Perplexity offers free access to core search and chat alongside paid plans. Research tools, limits and file-related features can differ by plan. Check the current official information before paying.
Try a topic you already understand first. Judge whether the answer identifies useful sources and whether checking it is faster than your normal research. Do not upload confidential files without reviewing the product’s policies and your organization’s approval.
Frequently asked questions
Can Perplexity replace checking sources?
No. Read the source for an important claim, including its date, context and limitations.
Is Perplexity free?
Core access has a free option. Paid plans provide different tools and limits. Check current plan details.
Why can a cited answer still be wrong?
The summary may misinterpret a page, cite a weak source or combine information incorrectly. A link alone does not verify the conclusion.
Is Perplexity the same as Character.AI?
No. Perplexity focuses on answers and research; Character.AI focuses on character conversations.
Sources and review
We checked these official sources on September 30, 2026. Product descriptions come from the maker’s documentation; examples and evaluation advice are AI Speed’s editorial suggestions, not measured performance claims. Plans, limits and availability can change. We have not tested every feature or certified the service’s privacy or output quality.
