Google announced on October 15, 2026 that Android Earthquake Alerts would expand from 98 countries and regions to more than 200. Its stated rollout for newly supported locations began that day and was expected to complete over the following week. That timetable is a company expectation, not a check that the feature is active on every eligible device today.
Coverage rollout and interface preview have different dates
The announcement distinguishes alerts for light, stronger and moderate-to-heavy shaking. It also previews richer Be Ready information, including a map and estimated magnitude, for the coming months. Those interface additions should not be described as fully delivered with the initial geographic expansion.
Google’s Android Help documentation says detection is incomplete, magnitude and intensity estimates can be wrong, and a warning may arrive before, during or after shaking starts. It requires Wi-Fi or mobile data for these alerts. Check the supported-location list and actual phone settings rather than inferring availability from an announcement headline.

Canada’s warning network is a separate primary reference
Canada was not listed in the Android system’s supported-country list when checked October 19. Natural Resources Canada separately describes a national Earthquake Early Warning system that sends public alerts through the National Public Alerting System. Its explanation identifies operating coverage in British Columbia and in Quebec and Ontario, not a promise covering every Canadian address.
NRCan explains that early warning detects an earthquake as it occurs. Locations close to the epicentre may receive a late alert, and warning does not replace preparedness. Readers should use the department’s guidance for protective actions and regional limitations. Google’s expansion count is not evidence that Canada newly joined that particular Android detection network.

Check the channel before relying on a notification
AI Speed’s practical assessment is to identify which organization issues a warning, which delivery channel carries it and which settings apply to that channel. Android earthquake notifications and wireless public emergency alerts should not be treated as interchangeable controls. A screenshot from another country cannot establish the settings or coverage on a Canadian handset.
For a household or workplace review, consult official guidance in advance and ensure the people involved understand the expected response. Do not wait for a phone notification to validate shaking you already feel. This article reports the product change and its limits; it does not test alert latency, certify a device or provide a location-specific safety assessment.
