AWS introduced the AWS Well-Architected Agent in public preview on October 1, 2026. The service offers contextual recommendations for cloud environments, covering areas such as cost, security, resilience and performance. It can examine infrastructure-as-code and supporting technical context to inform its advice.
The useful promise is a more focused review of an actual environment. The risk is treating a recommendation as an instruction to change production immediately. A lower cloud bill, for example, does not establish that an application will remain resilient during a failure or traffic surge.
Check eligibility and region details first
AWS documentation lists Business+ and higher support plans for access, including Enterprise On-Ramp, Enterprise and Unified Operations. Teams should check their exact plan rather than assume any paid support tier qualifies. The documentation also describes application recommendations as beta functionality.
Agent profiles are hosted in specified US regions, while scanning can cover commercial AWS regions. A workload running in Canada does not by itself establish that every part of an agent review stays in Canada. Organizations with location requirements should examine the profile region, data flows and applicable service documentation before enabling the feature.

Turn recommendations into controlled experiments
For a proposed cost change, compare the current service level with the revised configuration under realistic load. Include recovery behaviour and headroom, not just the monthly estimate. A recommendation to reduce capacity might be appropriate for a steady workload and unsuitable for an application with sharp peaks.
Infrastructure-as-code makes review easier when the proposed difference is small and traceable. Keep the existing configuration, identify the expected benefit and define a rollback condition. Run the change through the same approval and staging process used for human-written changes. The agent’s involvement should not erase ownership of the outcome.
What a Canadian cloud team should measure
Measure how much time the review saves and how often its recommendations survive engineering scrutiny. Track irrelevant findings, missing context and changes that appear sensible but fail an application requirement. That record can reveal whether the service is useful for a particular environment rather than cloud optimization in the abstract.
The preview announcement and user guide establish intended capabilities and access details. They do not certify a reviewed application or independently prove savings. For sensitive environments, start with a scoped profile, appropriate permissions and a clear reviewer before expanding the experiment.
