Google introduced Gemini 3.8 Live and Gemini 3.8 Live Extended Thinking on September 15, 2026, updating the announcement on September 17. The first is positioned for efficient conversational use; Extended Thinking targets more complex work. Google describes voice interaction that can continue while tools and background tasks run.
The release lists developer access through the Gemini API and AI Studio, while enterprise paths include private previews and future availability. Those paths should not be flattened into universal access. AI Speed has not reproduced the company’s benchmark results or measured a Canadian production deployment.
A conversation can succeed while the task fails
The interesting design problem is handling speech and action at the same time. A natural acknowledgement can make an interface feel responsive even when the requested operation is incomplete. Developers need a visible distinction between an instruction received, an action in progress and an action successfully completed.
Test a simple workflow with known outcomes, then interrupt it. Ask the system to change a detail while a tool request is pending. Verify whether the final action uses the corrected information, whether it duplicates work and whether it explains what happened. Score these outcomes separately from how pleasant the voice sounds.

Canadian language tests need realistic material
For an English-and-French application, use representative names, addresses expressed at a non-sensitive test level and ordinary language switching. Include speakers and acoustic conditions resembling the people who will use the service. A general multilingual claim is not evidence that your particular terminology is recognized accurately.
Check recovery after an unclear phrase and a dropped connection. The agent should ask for clarification when a detail matters rather than inventing a likely value. Keep a text or human fallback for tasks where speaking is inconvenient or inaccessible. A voice-first interface should not make it harder to inspect a confirmation before an action.
Measure a complete session
Record latency, tool success and the cost of the whole interaction, including retries. Avoid counting only a short model response if the application requires a long live session. Inspect what audio or transcripts are retained by the proposed system and configure the smallest necessary data flow before inviting real users.
The launch gives builders another option for conversational agents. Our analysis is that adoption should follow a repeatable test of interruption handling, language accuracy and completed actions. A model can make communication more fluid while leaving the responsibility for the workflow, its permissions and its acceptance criteria with the team deploying it.
