GitHub announced generally available REST endpoints for reading and updating Copilot model policies on October 19, 2026. The controls cover enterprises, enterprise teams, enterprise apps and organizations. For administrators, the significant change is that model availability can be managed programmatically; it is not a replacement for understanding which level has authority over an individual user’s access.
An API release does not make every policy mode generally available
The announcement provides GET and PATCH operations at four policy levels. Supporting documentation distinguishes the default organization-based delegation model from an opt-in enterprise-teams preview. Enterprise baselines can enable or disable models for everyone, while delegated settings provide narrower access.
In team mode, membership matters: users receive access enabled across their teams, subject to the enterprise baseline. An enterprise-disabled model cannot be enabled by a team. The API’s general availability should therefore not be presented as general availability of every administrative experience described in the documentation.

Start with a read-only inventory and an expected result
AI Speed’s assessment is that the first useful automation is an inventory: record the intended baseline, delegation mode and responsible owner. Compare the returned configuration with an approved model list before allowing a script to change anything. A successful response from a write endpoint establishes that a request was accepted, not that the resulting access matches the organization’s intention.
Use a limited test population and check effective availability for representative users, including someone in multiple teams. Keep the previous configuration and a reviewed recovery procedure. Do not switch delegation modes simply because a new endpoint is convenient; that can be a broader governance decision than enabling one model.

Canadian teams should separate access approval from model evaluation
A model-policy inventory can support a Canadian organization’s internal approvals, but an enabled setting does not establish acceptable data handling or suitable output quality. Keep the approved use case, model provider and information category visible to reviewers. The API announcement supplies no Canadian regulatory approval or measured productivity result.
A useful completion criterion is specific: the intended group can access an approved model, an excluded group cannot, and the change is attributable to an authorized administrator. That is more informative than counting how many policy updates a script performs. Review product documentation again when the hierarchy or preview status changes.
