Sony Interactive Entertainment announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution, or QSSR, for PS5 on October 1, 2026. The AI-guided upscaling library comes from Project Amethyst, its graphics collaboration with AMD. Sony says Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei are the first titles receiving it as an additional graphics option.
This is a game-integrated graphics feature, rather than a blanket enhancement for every PS5 title. Players should check the patch and options for the particular game before assuming a system update changes the entire library.
QSSR and PSSR serve different hardware tiers
Sony describes QSSR as a streamlined neural-network architecture with an implementation tuned for PS5. It distinguishes the new option from PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, or PSSR, on PS5 Pro, which remains the company’s higher-quality reference. The announcement says QSSR will be offered broadly to PlayStation developers.
Upscaling reconstructs a displayed image from the game’s rendering inputs. Its usefulness depends on the scenes, motion and graphics settings used. A sharper still frame is only one part of the experience; stability during movement matters when fine details appear and disappear across successive frames.

Compare motion, not only screenshots
Try the available modes in the same scene. Look at foliage, hair, thin structures and objects revealed as the camera moves. Check whether details shimmer or leave trails. A mode that looks attractive while standing still may behave differently during a fast turn or a busy fight.
Also consider responsiveness and frame pacing. An improvement in reconstructed detail may be less appealing if the selected mode feels less consistent. Keep the display settings and camera path similar when comparing so the test does not accidentally measure a different scene or television configuration.
What Canadian players should check
Confirm the game version and the option’s description in its graphics menu. The announcement does not imply a universal performance increase or identical results across every title. A developer still needs to integrate and tune the library for a particular game.
An internet speed test can help investigate download problems or connection issues in online play. It cannot measure QSSR image quality or a console’s local rendering performance. Those are separate questions, and separating them helps a player identify whether the problem is the network, display or game settings.
