GitHub said on October 19, 2026 that some unauthenticated HTTPS clones and fetches of public repositories may temporarily require authentication during unusual traffic. The company describes a narrowly applied availability protection, not a general requirement to sign in before reading public repositories. An affected operation should return an authentication-required message.
Separate the affected transport from repository visibility
GitHub says authenticated HTTPS operations, SSH Git operations, pushes and unrelated web or API traffic are unaffected by this protection. It applies to github.com repositories across plans. The company also acknowledges that legitimate and anomalous traffic can share signals, so legitimate anonymous requests may be caught.
That scope matters when diagnosing a failed build. A public HTTPS clone error does not by itself establish that an owner changed repository permissions or that the entire GitHub platform is unavailable. Check the exact operation and message before altering repository visibility, switching protocols or changing unrelated application settings.

Use the configured identity rather than widening access
For automated jobs, GitHub recommends its built-in GITHUB_TOKEN in GitHub Actions and prefers a GitHub App installation token for other CI systems; personal access tokens are another supported option. If a job cannot authenticate, the announced alternative is to retry once the temporary protection is lifted.
AI Speed’s practical assessment is to review the existing credential path before adding a new secret. Never copy a personal administrator token into a public job or expose credentials to untrusted contributions just to make a clone succeed. GitHub’s authentication documentation describes supported methods, but teams must still choose an identity whose permissions fit their workflow.

A bounded recovery check for Canadian maintainers
Record the failing transport, repository, time and error category without recording secrets. Confirm whether the same approved authenticated path works, then re-run only the failed step where the build system supports it. Avoid a rapid retry loop that turns one temporary denial into additional load.
For Canadian teams maintaining open-source mirrors or reproducible builds, include anonymous-source availability in dependency planning. Test how a clean environment behaves when credentials are unavailable, and distinguish a temporary upstream restriction from a corrupted local checkout. This article does not claim that AI Speed observed a live GitHub outage or that a particular shared network has been flagged.
