What is ChatGPT?

A beginner’s guide to what it does, how to try it and what to check.

What does ChatGPT do?

Think of ChatGPT as a workspace for developing an answer through conversation. You can ask for a first draft, explain what is wrong with it, and ask for a revision. Depending on the tools and plan available, it can also work with files and images or search the web. The chat app is different from the API that developers use to build their own software.

The useful part is not simply receiving a paragraph. It is being able to specify an audience, format and goal, then refine the result. For example, a neighbour’s short email and a formal complaint letter need different wording even when they describe the same problem.

A first task that makes sense

Try a low-risk task with an answer you can judge. Our suggested prompt is: “Turn these rough notes into a polite email of no more than 120 words. Preserve the facts and ask me about anything missing.” Paste invented notes or information you are comfortable sharing.

Read the draft against your notes. Check whether names, dates, amounts and commitments changed. Ask for a warmer tone or a shorter version rather than accepting the first output. This exercise lets you learn the tool without relying on it for a consequential decision.

ChatGPT versus a search engine

A search engine usually helps you find pages; ChatGPT generates an answer. Its web-search feature can provide current information and links, but the presence of a citation does not establish that every sentence is supported. Open the original page for an important claim.

For a product manual, use the maker’s instructions as the source of truth. You can ask ChatGPT to explain a section you provide, then compare the explanation with the manual. This is more useful than asking it to guess your device’s settings.

Free access, paid plans and privacy

OpenAI offers free access and paid plans with different tools and limits. Check the current plan page before subscribing; an old comparison can miss a changed limit. A subscription to the chat app should not be assumed to include API usage.

Review Data Controls before adding personal material. OpenAI describes Temporary Chat as a mode that does not appear in history, create memories or train models. It is still wise to leave out passwords, government identifiers and confidential work. Follow your employer’s rules for approved tools.

How to tell whether it helped

Judge a draft by accuracy, clarity and the time needed to fix it. If reviewing the output takes longer than writing it yourself, simplify the task or provide better context. Save a useful instruction so you can reuse the approach.

For Canadian readers, specify Canadian spelling, the relevant province and the date when those details matter. Those instructions guide the response; they do not turn ChatGPT into an authority on Canadian law, tax or employment rules.

Frequently asked questions

Is ChatGPT a person?

No. Its conversational style is generated by software. It does not establish human understanding, lived experience or professional qualifications.

Is ChatGPT free?

There is free access, with limits. Paid plans offer different allowances and tools. Check OpenAI’s current plan information for your account.

Can ChatGPT make mistakes?

Yes. Verify facts, calculations and sources, especially when an error would affect a decision.

Is ChatGPT the same as Character.AI?

No. ChatGPT is a general assistant; Character.AI is known for character-based conversations. Choose according to your task rather than treating all chat apps as interchangeable.
