What is Google Gemini?

A beginner’s guide to what it does, how to try it and what to check.

What is the Gemini app?

The app is a place to ask questions and develop ideas through conversation. Google describes everyday uses such as planning, summaries and first drafts. Gemini appears in different Google experiences, so a feature you see on a phone may not work the same way in a browser or a work account.

Think of the model as the engine and the app as the product around it. Instructions, connected services and account settings affect what it can actually do.

A useful first prompt

Try: “Help me plan a weekend study session. I have two hours, these three topics and a short quiz next week. Ask what you need to know before suggesting a schedule.” This is our example, not a tested productivity claim.

Inspect the result for a realistic workload and breaks. Then ask for a simpler version. For a factual study topic, check explanations against your course materials rather than assuming the schedule’s confident wording means the subject content is correct.

Connected apps: convenience with permissions

Some Gemini experiences can work with connected Google services. Read the permission and account notices before enabling access. A personal account, a school account and an employer-managed account can have different settings and restrictions.

Before asking an assistant to act, distinguish a suggestion from a completed action. A drafted message is not a sent message, and a proposed calendar entry is not proof it was saved. Review any action that creates a commitment or shares information.

Gemini versus Google Search

Search can direct you to original websites. Gemini creates a response that may combine or interpret information. When accuracy matters, locate the source document and check the relevant passage yourself.

For a Canadian government program, specify its name, jurisdiction and date. Use the official program page for eligibility and deadlines. Asking Gemini to explain that page can help with comprehension, but it does not replace the page’s rules.

Accounts, paid features and privacy

Google offers Gemini access with different capabilities and limits, including upgrades. Availability can vary by location, age, device and account type. Confirm the feature you need before buying an upgrade.

Read the Gemini Apps Privacy Hub and your activity controls. Do not assume that a setting in one Google product controls every Gemini experience. For workplace use, follow organizational guidance before pasting company documents.

Frequently asked questions

Is Gemini the same as Google Assistant?

Gemini provides an AI assistant experience, but supported actions and device features differ. Check Google’s current guidance for your device.

Can I use Gemini with a work account?

It depends on the account’s edition, administrator settings and available features. A personal-account tutorial may not apply.

Is Gemini always correct?

No. Google advises checking responses. Verify facts and do not rely on it as professional advice.

Does Gemini need my Google password in a prompt?

No. Never paste a password into an AI chat. Use the official sign-in flow and account permission controls.
